In Live Like a Narnian Joe Rigney shows that Owen Barfield was right--What C.S. Lewis thought about everything was secretly present in what he said about anything. From apologetics to his thoughts on education, from his view of science to the role of government, from Natural Law to true manhood and womanhood--the breadth of Lewis's bright vision of life shines through in his beloved Chronicles. Come, learn to breathe Narnian air.

Live Like A Narnian Christian Discipleship in Lewis Chronicles Joe Rigney 9780615872049 Books

This book is intended for lovers of Narnia. If you find yourself in that camp, purchase a copy now! My own heart has resonated with and even longed for Narnia ever since I was first introduced to the Chronicles as a child. I've read them over and over again, even into adulthood, and have found that Aslan has in fact grown with me over the years. What I have found as I have grown in my faith is that my love for Aslan/Narnia has actually increased my love for Jesus and my desire for heaven. This new book by Joe Rigney has only added more kindling to that fire! Rigney masterfully gives the reader a tour of Narnia, from a unique Lewisian angle, that is not only insightful but worshipful. After the introduction, the chapters are concise and to the point, offering piercing jabs to awaken the reader's heart to the type of life he was intended for - the life of a Narnian. I close with this: Aslan once told Lucy that the reason she was brought into Narnia was that by knowing him in Narnia for a little while, she would know him better at home in England. In a similar way, "Live Like a Narnian" will help you get to know Aslan a little better in Narnia so that you might know Jesus a little better in life.

P.S. Rigney offers the reader the option to skip the introduction in the case that they might find it "overly technical and complicated." My own opinion: don't accept his offer! The introduction established a critical foundation for the book AND better yet, it left my heart soaring and eagerly anticipating what I would encounter in the rest of the book.

Live Like A Narnian Christian Discipleship in Lewis Chronicles Joe Rigney 9780615872049 Books Reviews

Reading this book was like sitting with your best friend over coffee and a cozy fire talking about your favorite books! I loved rejoicing with the author over the parts of the Chronicles that had always made my heart sing, and I loved discovering Lewis's motives behind key scenes in the Narnian stories. Also, I found the way Rigney applied Lewis's other works to revealing themes in Narnia intelligent, smooth, and thorough. Rigney is a talented author. I very much recommend this book IF you have read the Chronicles; if not, go get them, read them, then read this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it gave me a way to look at the Chronicles of Narnia through the lens of how Lewis saw his society at the time. And for me, how the various books reflect my own society.

I'd recommend it for Narnia lovers who want to reflect on the deeper meanings behind each book.
He gets Narnia and has an amazing ability to apply it to our lives.
Four stars because few times in the beginning he tries to fit Lewis with American political perspectives.
But then it goes better and better chapter by chapter .
If you adore C. S. Lewis and the world he created, then I recommend this book. In the same style as 'Not a Tame Lion' it offers fascinating insight into several characters and occurrences in the world of Narnia. After all, who doesn't want to live like a Narnian? (Or an Archelander at the very least.)
What a treat to spend a few days with a fellow countryman considering our common friends and our most glorious King and God! One forgets in the course of this Earthly exile that this is not our home. But exile though I may be, I can still live like a Narnian (and citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven). Still, it's nice to meet a fellow voyager who knows the same people and places, like unto Bree and Aravis, only talking about a place beloved and longed for, not one which one is try to leave behind.
This book does a great job of carefully examining the power of a story well told. He helps us see how in well-crafted narratives there's a lot that can be learned.

Narnia is one of those stories that helps us to see the big things in the world by making them small.

This book is explicit in taking the small things and making them big. It draws a lot of helpful conclusions for life both spiritual and earthly.

Take the time to read and enjoy.

But don't let learning the lessons distract you from the power of the story. You need both.
If you love C.S Lewis you will love this book, Rigney shows how Lewis weaved christian truth all over the chronicles. In so many characters and so many scenes there is christian virtue being taught. Its amazing all the things Lewis was able to teach and communicate in the Chronicles, I felt like Paul when the scales fell off his eyes, it was like for the first time I could truly see. This book will make you want to read Narnia again with new fresh eyes, it might even allow you to read it as a child again (if such a thing were possible this book would be the way to do it). He argues as to why it is not just okay, but is good for children to read Narnia and other fantasy books like it. For all those who struggle with there being magic in books and movies, Rigney makes a great case as to why there indeed is good and bad magic. Reading this book made me love Narnia even more (though I did not think it possible) but more so it made me love Jesus more, this book has already started making me a better father, man, and christian. There is so much information in this book that you might need to read it twice to get it all, but trust me that would be no burden what so ever! Do not hesitate to buy this book, unless of course you are afraid of the low growl of a Great Lion.
